1969-1970 Topps Basketball Near-Complete Set (88/99)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,560
Presented is an extremely attractive and overall high-grade near-complete set of eighty-eight different cards (out of ninety-nine) from the legendary 1969-1970 Topps basketball set, highlighted by numerous Hall of Famers and stars, including the rookie card of Hall of Famer John Havlicek. The 1969-1970 set represents Topps' first large-scale basketball effort in over a decade (since its first issue in 1957) and is extremely popular with collectors due to its size, design, and star selection. This near-complete set has been consigned by the family of an old-time collector, who very likely assembled these cards directly from packs in the year of issue! (The Lew Alcindor rookie card from this set is offered individually in this auction due to its extremely high grade and value.) Condition is 54% Nr/Mt or better, 34% Ex-Mt (including a few Ex), and 12% Gd/Vg. Keys: #1 Chamberlain (Vg), 2 Goodrich RC (Ex-Mt), 10 Thurmond RC (Nr/Mt), 15 Hawkins RC (Ex-Mt), 20 Havlicek RC (slight miscut, otherwise Ex-Mt), 40 Cunningham RC (Ex), 43 Bradley RC (Nr/Mt), 44 Wilkins (Nr/Mt), 45 Lucas RC (Nr/Mt), 50 Robertson (Ex-Mt+), 55 Bing RC (Ex-Mt), 56 Unseld RC (Ex-Mt+), 60 Reed RC (Nr/Mt), 75 Hayes RC (Ex-Mt), 80 Monroe RC (Nr/Mt), 85 DeBusschere RC (Ex+), and 99 Checklist (Pr). Missing only the following eleven cards for completion: #25 Alcindor, 29, 35 Baylor, 51, 87, 88, 89, 90 West, 94, 97, and 98 Frazier RC. This is a very attractive, crisp, clean, and high-grade near-complete set of this significant and popular early Topps basketball issue. Total: 88 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+.
