1948 Bowman Basketball Near-Complete PSA-Graded Set (57/72)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,800
Near-complete set of 1948 Bowman Basketball consisting of fifty-seven different cards out of seventy-two in a complete set. Missing the following fifteen cards for completion: #6, 13, 16, 25, 29, 32 Holzman RC, 37, 40, 41, 55, 64, 65, 66 Pollard RC, 69 Mikan RC, and 70. (The George Mikan card that was included with this set is offered individually in this auction due to its extraordinary high grade of PSA NM-MT 8.) Each card in this near-complete set is graded and encapsulated by PSA (submitted by REA). The 1948 Bowman Basketball series is particularly significant as this was the first set ever issued devoted exclusively to basketball. The George Mikan card in the set is widely recognized as the most sought-after and valuable of all basketball cards. This 1948 issue was the only basketball set Bowman ever produced. Cards from this set are extremely hard to find in high grade in part because these cards (like 1949 Bowman baseball) often naturally have soft corners due to the quality of the paper stock on which they are printed.
PSA Grading Composite: NM-MT 8 (7 cards): #26, 35, 36, 43 Halbert RC, 48 Sadowski RC (OC), 50 (OC), and 54. NM+ 7.5 (1 card): #30. NM 7 (11 cards): #5, 8, 10 Davies RC (HOF), 14, 17, 21, 22, 42, 53, 60, and 61. EX-MT+ 6.5 (1 card): #12. EX-MT 6 (21 cards): #2, 3, 6, 15, 18, 19, 20, 23, 27, 31, 45, 47, 49, 51, 52 Simmons RC, 56, 59, 62, 63, 68, and 71. EX+ 5.5 (1 card): #39. EX 5 (6 cards): #1 Calverley, 11, 28, 33, 38 Jeanette RC (HOF), and 57. VG-EX+ 4.5 (1 card): #34 Fulks RC (HOF). VG-EX 4 (3 cards): #9 Phillip RC (HOF), 44, and 72 Braun RC. Ungraded (5 cards): #4 (miscut, otherwise Ex-Mt), 24 (altered, otherwise Ex+), 46 McKinney RC (trimmed, otherwise Nr/Mt), 58 Risen RC (HOF, trimmed, otherwise Nr/Mt+), and 67 (miscut, otherwise Nr/Mt). Each of these five cards were submitted to PSA at the same time as the other cards and were not encapsulated for the reasons mentioned.
This is the first and only basketball set Bowman ever issued. It apparently did not sell well, as Bowman never followed up with another basketball set. The set includes the rookie cards of all of the major stars of the era. 1948 Bowman Basketball is well known for production-quality issues, making the assembling of high-quality sets particularly challenging. This is a very attractive, clean, and overall fairly high-grade near-complete set of this significant basketball issue. The SMR value for just forty-six of the cards (not including the two qualified cards, the four cards graded less than EX, or the five ungraded cards) is $4,450. Total: 57 cards.
