1952 Royal Desserts Basketball Complete SGC-Graded Set (8)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,700

In 1952, if you were walking down the supermarket aisle, you would have seen unopened boxes of Royal Desserts, with the front displaying the company logos and the reverse featuring a package-design card (intended to be cut from the box) with an illustration of a famous star of sport or film. Presented in this lot is a complete eight-card set of "Royal Stars of Basketball," highlighted by the highest-graded example on record of the key card of Hall of Famer George Mikan. Each card is graded and encapsulated by SGC. Issued just one card per box of Royal Desserts, the cards were designed to be hand cut by youngsters from the back of these boxes. You had to buy an entire box of pudding, pie filling, or gelatin to get just one card. Because these cards were hand-cut package-design cards, highly-graded examples (and even numerically-graded examples at all) are very difficult to get because the quality of the cut is a major factor taken into consideration. Package-design cards also commonly suffer from creases, wrinkles, staining, and other flaws related to their method of issue and time spent on shelves and in pantries, with little thought given to their collectible value. Impressively, this set of eight cards contains five numerically-graded cards and only three cards graded "Authentic," due to irregular cuts. Full-size cards measure 2-5/8 x 3-1/4 inches and have blank backs. The fronts feature a black-and-white picture of the player along with a short biography and information about the company's mail-away program for a commemorative plastic album to hold the set. SGC Grading Composite: #1 Schaus (EX+ 70), 2 McGuire (HOF, EX 60), 3 Nichols (Authentic, otherwise Pr), 4 Brian (Authentic, otherwise Ex), 5 Fulks (VG+ 45), 6 George Mikan (HOF, VG/EX 50), 7 Pollard (Authentic, otherwise Fr), and 8 Jeannette (HOF, EX 60). Each of the five numerically graded cards are the only examples graded at their respective level with none higher. This is an extremely impressive and very rarely seen complete set of these eight basketball subjects from the classic Royal Desserts series, highlighted by an exceptional, highest-graded example of key card George Mikan. Total: 8 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $2,700
