1949 Philadelphia Athletics Road Jersey
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $840
Philadelphia Athletics road jersey dating from the 1949 season. The gray flannel jersey features the letter "A" on the left breast and the number "14" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in blue on white felt. Located on the interior right-front tail are a "McGregor 44" label, a "Mitchell & Ness" label, the number "14" chain-stitched in black upon a white strip tag, and a flag tag reading "Set 1 1949." The jersey, which is original and unaltered, displays light wear. No player or coach wore number "14" for the Athletics in 1949, so this jersey must have been used as an extra for the season. (Herman Franks wore number "14" the previous year but was released by the club after the season; in 1950 Gene Markland wore number "14.") 1940s Major League flannel jerseys are scarce, and this is a fine representative example of this extremely rare style from one of the American League's oldest franchises. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $840
