1954 Carl Scheib Philadelphia Athletics Game-Used Road Jersey - One-Year Style - Final Season in Philadelphia!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,600

Rare one-year-only style Philadelphia Athletics road jersey worn by pitcher Carl Scheib during the club's final season in Philadelphia, in 1954. The gray flannel jersey is lettered "Athletics" on the front and features the number "24" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in blue chain-stitch on red felt. Located in the collar are a "MacGregor 44" label and the name "Scheib" chain-stitched in red upon a white strip tag. Both a "Pearson" sporting-goods label and a flag tag reading "Set 2 1954" appear on the interior right-front tail . This jersey style was only used by the club during the 1954 season and is markedly different from the 1953 uniform. Specifically, the team name "Athletics" replaced the "A" on the left breast that had been part of the uniform design since 1928. The jersey also features a new red-and-blue piping along both the collar and each sleeve end that was discontinued the following year. This the first example of a 1954 Philadelphia Athletics jersey we have ever offered and we can only recall having seen one other at auction in the past fifteen years. The jersey, which is original and unaltered, displays moderate wear, including a few tiny soil stains on the front. Scheib only spent the first few weeks of the season with the Athletics in 1954 before the club traded his contract to the St. Louis Cardinals. He was returned to the A's on June 1st as part of that same deal and was promptly released. He never played in the majors again. Scheib started one game for the A's in 1954, losing to the White Sox 14-3 on May 3 in Philadelphia. Prior to that, he spent his first ten major league seasons as a member of the A's, compiling a record of 45-65 in 107 career starts. 1950s-era Athletics flannel jerseys are scarce and this example, which is not only a one-year style, but dates from the club's final season in Philadelphia, is an exceptional example. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,600
