1911 to 1982 National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues Convention Badges (43)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,200
Collection of forty-one National Association of Professional Baseball League convention badges, including a number of duplicates, spanning the years 1911 to 1982. This is an extraordinary collection of these badges, many of which are exceedingly rare, with the earlier examples especially noteworthy for their exquisite design. Twenty-three of the badges are extremely substantial, featuring a ribbon design (most of which include a pendant); eleven are designed with cards in plastic pinback holders. The remainder are pins. Many of the badges still display the name of the original recipient, including one issued to Branch Rickey Jr., in 1948. This is not surprising, as these important National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues meetings were attended by the highest-level executives in professional baseball. The badges and pins, as can easily be seen, are very reminiscent of World Series and All Star press pins, but in fact are many times rarer due to their extremely limited distribution. These are not even on the radar of most collectors (including, most notably, press-pin collectors) simply because they are rare (which, ironically, is also the reason there is no formal established market for the impressive early pins and badges, as there is for press pins). This is a remarkable assemblage including many extremely desirable early years. The years represented here, with the number of badges for each year (if more than one) noted in parentheses, are 1911, 1913, 1914, 1921, 1928 (2), 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937 (2), 1939, 1940 (2), 1945, 1946, 1947 (2), 1948 (2) 1949 (2), 1950 (2), 1951 (2), 1952, 1953, 1954 (2), 1955, 1956, 1964, 1966, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1981, and 1982. Four of the badges are not dated. The collection also includes a 1976 American League season pass (issued to Bill Reep) and two Coca-Cola promotional pins issued to guests at the 1981 baseball winter meetings. The offering of this collection, in our strong opinion, represents an extremely interesting and significant collecting opportunity. A few of the early badges display fraying and moderate tears to the ribbon, otherwise the collection is in Excellent condition overall. Total: 46 items (43 badges, 1 season pass, and 2 Coca-Cola promotional pins). From the personal collection of Dr. Paul Muchinsky, legendary pioneer collector and author of Baseball Pinback Buttons: A Photographically Illustrated Compendium and Price Guide. Reserve $1,000.
