Rare “61 in ’61 or Bust” Mantle and Maris Pinback
Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $3,600
The premier Mickey Mantle/Roger Maris pinback from the 1961 home-run race. Measuring an impressive 3.5 inches in diameter, this magnificently designed souvenir pinback is the rarest of all celluloid pins relating to the historic 1961 home-run race. Several different pin styles were sold by venders in 1961 commemorating, and cheering on, Mantle’s and Maris’ race for Ruth’s record of 60 home runs in a single season. This style pin is the scarcest by far. This is only the third example of this pin we have ever offered. The first appeared as Lot 383 in our May 2004 auction (realized $4,600); the second appeared as Lot 1326 in our May 2008 auction (realized $3,525). An extraordinary 1961 Mantle/Maris souvenir item, and one of the most classic and desirable baseball pinbacks of the era. In outstanding Near Mint condition. From the personal collection of Dr. Paul Muchinsky, legendary pioneer collector and author of Baseball Pinback Buttons: A Photographically Illustrated Compendium and Price Guide. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $3,600
