1931-1964 Princeton & Yale Baseball Pins Complete Set (31)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $720

Complete set of pins, spanning the years 1931 to 1964, issued for the annual Princeton alumni parade. The parade, which began in the 1890s, traditionally takes place at the end of the year on the Saturday before commencement. In addition to the parade, the day-long festivities also include a baseball game between Princeton and Yale. This collection of thirty-one pins represents a complete run from 1931 to 1964 (there are only thirty-one because no pins were issued during the war years of 1943, 1944, and 1945). All of the circular pins are lettered either "ALUMNI PARADE" or "ALUMNI P-RADE," and include the respective year below. Most are designed with Princeton's school colors, but a few of the earlier pins are in solid hues of green, blue, and yellow. All but two measure 1.75 inches in diameter (1931 and 1932 are slightly larger, measuring 2 inches in diameter). While of course there is no way for us to know with certainty, we would be surprised if another complete set exists! Also included with the pins are a small Princeton flag (6 x 4.25 inches; Ex) attached to a slender wooden pike (10.5 inches high) that was originally obtained together with the 1936 pin, and a cloth armband, reading "P-RADE MARSHALL" (6.5 x 3 inches; Ex-Mt) that was originally obtained together with the 1964 pin. The 1942 pin displays a large crack and a few others display moderate wear. In Excellent condition overall. Total: 31 pins, plus a flag and armband. From the personal collection of Dr. Paul Muchinsky, legendary pioneer collector and author of Baseball Pinback Buttons: A Photographically Illustrated Compendium and Price Guide. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $720
