1914 Philadelphia Athletics World Series Press Pin
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,680
Philadelphia Athletics press pin issued for the 1914 World Series against the Boston Braves. The 1914 Philadelphia Athletics World Series press pin is noted not only for its elegant design but also for its extreme rarity. The brooch portion of the pin (1.75 x 1 inches) features the team name "Philadelphia Athletics American League" printed in relief surrounding an image of the team's logo, a white elephant, perched atop a baseball, which is fashioned in white enamel. Hanging from the brooch is a striped ribbon bearing the word "Press" in gilt lettering. Completing the exquisite design is a rectangular medallion (1.25 x 1.25 inches) that is bordered in blue enamel, upon which is lettered "World Series Shibe Park Philadelphia." The year, "1914," appears along the base in relief. The center of the medallion displays an image of a globe, in the center of which is the crossed-bats logo of the Baseball Writers' Association rendered in green enamel. The beauty of the 1914 Philadelphia A's World Series press pin notwithstanding, it is also extremely rare. Few examples are known, nearly all of which are found only in the most advanced private collections or museums. This is one of the Holy Grails of World Series press pins and one that is seldom seen at a public auction. Both the brooch portion of the pin and the medallion display moderate tarnishing and are otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Unfortunately, the ribbon is badly torn and frayed, with just a few fragments still remaining (the word "Press" is no longer present). Despite the obvious flaws, the rarity of this pin is such that even in its present condition it remains a fine representative sample for any collector looking to obtain a complete World Series press pin run. Manufactured by J. E. Caldwell; brooch; blue, white, and green enamel with ribbon.
