1912 E300 Plow's Candy Ty Cobb PSA EX 5

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $36,000

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Presented is one of the key cards to the extremely elusive 1912 Plow’s Candy issue: Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb. This extreme rarity gets our vote as perhaps the most majestic and impressive of all Ty Cobb cards. All Plow's Candy cards are rare. They have always been highly desirable. In recent years, the sighting of even a non-Hall of Famer sample is an event that gets the serious attention of advanced collectors. This unusual sepia-toned, large-format (3 x 4 inches) candy issue was not even known to exist until the 1960s. In addition to being among the rarest candy cards of the era, Plow's Candy are also among the most distinctive and beautifully designed. This is a remarkably striking Ty Cobb card. Cobb is pictured in a crisp, full-length batting pose. A teammate waits on deck behind him, with spectator-filled sections of stadium providing the backdrop. In addition to featuring the quintessential Cobb image, the photographs used by Plow's Candy are unique to the set. The offered card displays four square corners showing just the slightest hint of wear under close inspection. The image clarity is flawless, and the card is perfectly centered. The blank back is clean, with only an extremely faint area of toning along the bottom edge (entirely unobtrusive and mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy). The first Plow's Candy Cobb example in any condition we have ever offered, this is one of only two examples of Cobb graded at this lofty level! A spectacular example of one of the rarest of all Ty Cobb cards, from one of the rarest and most substantial of all candy-card issues. This is an extraordinary card that would be an extremely significant addition to any world-class Hall of Fame, Ty Cobb, or prewar-card collection. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000++.
