1910 Hermes Ice Cream Pinback Original-Owner Collection (9) with Honus Wagner!

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $5,400

Collection of nine extremely rare pins, representing six different players, from the 1910 Hermes Ice Cream advertising pin series. The highlight, of course, is Honus Wagner, which is not only the key pin from the set but one of the most sought after of all vintage baseball pins. This is just the second Honus Wagner Hermes Ice Cream pin we have ever offered and, to the best of our knowledge, is one of fewer than ten examples. The design of the Hermes Ice Cream pins (1.25 inches in diameter) is similar to that of the Morton's Bread and Buster Brown pin sets featuring Detroit Tiger players, but Hermes Ice Cream pins feature Pittsburgh Pirate players and are far more elusive than the Detroit pins. In fact, probably no more than a one-hundred Hermes pins in total (of all players) are known to exist! Incredibly, all of the pins offered here represent a recent, newly discovered original-owner find! The settling of an estate is responsible for the discovery of the collection and its presentation to the modern collecting world in this auction. Of special note, in speaking with the family, we actually found there was a direct connection to Hermes Ice Cream. According to our consignor, his wife's grandfather attended Duquesne University, which, at the time, was located very close to the Hermes Ice Cream plant. While only speculation, it is assumed that these pins were obtained by her grandfather during his visits to the ice-cream store in 1910. They have been in the family's possession since that time and were only recently discovered by our consignor's wife after carefully going through some long-forgotten boxes of family-related material left to her. The Wagner pin displays a few light scratches and a portion of the paper backing is missing. In strong Very Good condition overall (Ex appearance at a glance, downgraded due to tiny technical faults/scratches that do not affect display value. This is a beautiful pin!) The remaining players represented in this collection are Fred Clarke (Gd-Vg), Tommy Leach (a portion of the back paper is missing and the stickpin is a little bent; otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex), Babe Adams (2 pins; both Ex), Dots Miller (2 pins; both Vg, one is missing its back paper, the other retains a portion of its back paper), and John "Chief" Wilson (2 pins; one Vg, one Fr-Gd due to separating at collet along reverse of left side but still looks fine from front; each missing a portion of its back paper). This is an outstanding newly discovered collection of nine rare 1910 Hermes Ice Cream pins (six different plus three duplicates) which will provide a rare and substantial foundation for the seemingly impossible task of assembling a complete set of all twelve pins in the set. Total: 9 pins. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,400
