Extremely Rare Circa 1962 Roger Maris Ice-Cream Advertising Poster
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $600
Roger Maris goes to bat for Gold Mine brand ice cream in this colorful retail advertising poster. Maris is pictured in mid swing in the upper right corner, while the text reads "Roger Maris Says Doko Chocolate Frozen Treat is the Biggest Hit of All! - Buy 'Em Here . . . They're the Greatest." An illustration of the frozen confection is featured prominently in the center. Maris was recruited by Gold Mine as a company spokesperson following his record-breaking 1961 season. We have seen a number of other Roger Maris Gold Mine ice-cream posters, but this particular example, for Doko bars, is especially rare and represents the first example we have ever offered. This poster originates from a recent find of various circa 1962 point-of-sale advertising posters once belonging to an ice-cream distributor. Only several poster examples in the find had anything to do with baseball, and all were exceptional rarities. In addition to this poster, there were two Mantle/Berra Yoo-Hoo posters (each a different design) that are offered elsewhere in this auction (they were the only baseball-related ice-cream posters in the find). Printed on thin paper stock, the poster (17 x 11 inches) displays a moderate-to-heavy vertical crease in the center, a few light border and corner creases, and minor edge tears. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $600
