Extremely Rare 1960s Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra Yoo-Hoo "Tee Shirt" Banner

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $720

This rare early 1960s point-of-sale advertising display for Yoo-Hoo features portrait images of both Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle and explains how kids can redeem Yoo-Hoo bottle caps and wrappers in exchange for a Berra or Mantle autographed tee shirt. Mantle and Berra are pictured wearing the respective tee shirts, while the text reads in part "Boys and Girls Get Your Official Yogi Berra or Mickey Mantle Autographed Tee Shirt only 50¢ Plus 2 bottle caps or can tops from Yoo-Hoo Chocolate Drink or 2 wrappers from Yoo-Hoo Bar." This is the first example of this poster we have ever offered. This poster originates from a recent find of various circa 1962 point-of-sale advertising posters once belonging to an ice-cream distributor. Only several poster examples in the find had anything to do with baseball, and all were exceptional rarities. In addition to this poster, there was one other Mantle/Berra Yoo-Hoo poster (with a different design) and a Roger Maris Gold Mine ice-cream poster, both of which are also offered in this auction (they were the only baseball-related ice-cream posters in the find). While many people recall Berra's long-standing promotion of the chocolate beverage, the drink was actually invented many years earlier, in the 1920s. It wasn't until Berra became friends with the owner of the company in the 1950s, however, that Yoo-Hoo became a household name. Berra not only recruited a number of investors to help finance a major production facility, but also enlisted the aid of many of his teammates, most important Mickey Mantle, to help promote the beverage. Their efforts were very successful. In a short time Yoo-Hoo became one of the most popular refreshments in America and the chosen drink of every diehard Yankees fan. The poster (14 x 6 inches), printed on thin paper stock, displays a small area of light foxing in the upper left quadrant; otherwise it's in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $720
