1914 Ty Cobb Royal Tailors Album Page
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $420
Rare page from a 1914 Royal Tailors salesman's sample book featuring Ty Cobb. The large-format illustrated page (17 x 19.75 inches) pictures Cobb in one of the company's overcoats, to the right of which is a circular vignette of Cobb sliding into home. The printed caption along the base reads "Mr. Tyrus Cobb, keen in clothes-buying; a Royal Tailorite, of course." The quality and large size of this piece, combined with the colorized image of Cobb, makes it an ideal display piece and one that has been recognized as a classic by advanced collectors for decades. Even though this is a page from an enormous salesman's sample book (printed on thick high-quality cardboard stock), it has the appearance and impact of an extraordinary store advertising display piece. Originals are extremely rare, as are the large Royal Tailors salesman's sample books from which they originate. When these salesman's sample books do surface, the various player pages (other players, such as Babe Ruth, Frank Chance, and Johnny Evers appear in different editions) are almost always removed for framing due to their outstanding aesthetics. The offered page displays minor wear in the lower right corner and is otherwise in apparent Excellent to Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 20.75 x 25.5 inches. This is both a scarce and highly attractive Ty Cobb advertising display piece dating from the height of his playing career. Reserve $100. Estimate $200+. SOLD FOR $420
