Mickey Mantle Wall Plaque by Armand LaMontagne

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $420

Large wooden wall plaque of Mickey Mantle by noted artist Armand LaMontagne. The bas-relief sculpture pictures Mantle in a bust-length image set upon a black circular mount. Signed by the artist in the lower left. The reverse of the plaque also bears LaMontagne's handwritten inscription "Mickey Mantle by Armand LaMontagne," as well as the artist's official proprietary seal. LaMontagne created two different versions of this plaque. One was a fully painted sculpture with gold overtones, which is the type offered here, while the other was colored in muted gold hues. While we do not know the exact production numbers for each of the two different Mantle plaques, we believe that they were quite limited, as we have only seen a few other examples. This is the first example we have ever offered and one that would be a welcome addition to any advanced Mickey Mantle or baseball artwork collection. Armand LaMontagne (1939- ) is one of the nation's foremost artists, with two of his most famous works, life size statues of Babe Ruth and Ted Williams, on permanent display at the Baseball Hall of Fame. Additional works of his can be found in many important venues, including the Basketball Hall of Fame, the New England Sports Museum, the Patton Museum, and the Gerald Ford Museum. The plaque measures 18 inches in diameter and is in Near Mint condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $420
