1970 Chemtoy Baseball National League Superballs in Original Retail Box
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $840
In 1970 the Chemtoy Corporation issued what it thought would be a sure hit with baseball fans of all ages: "Full Color Pictures of National League Baseball Players in High Bouncing Balls." Unfortunately, the fun of bouncing your favorite player's face on the pavement or against the wall was not all it was cracked up to be and the product quickly disappeared from retail shelves. In case some collectors might doubt the existence of such a product (or for those few collectors who do remember them and want to relive that period of their childhood) we offer a collection of seventy-nine of those "High Bouncing Balls" in their original retail box. The box cover features a colorful game-in-progress scene which opens up to reveal seventy-nine near-mint balls. Numerous players are featured here, many more than once, including Pete Rose, Willie Stargell, Orlando Cepeda, Joe Morgan, Bill Mazeroski, Tom Seaver, Al Oliver, Clete Boyer, Ed Kranepool, Matty Alou, Lee May, Doug Radar, Coco Laboy, Rusty Staub, and Tony Cloninger. The box (8.25 x 10 x 2 inches) is missing a small portion of its lid (not affecting any of the graphics or text) which, as a result, is now detached from the main body. Otherwise, the box remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $840
