1954 Roy Campanella Wines and Liquor Store Advertising Calendar

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $240

While it might seem crazy to many in this day and age, it was not so long ago that professional baseball players had to supplement their baseball income by working during the off-season. For Roy Campanella, that meant tending to his liquor store in Harlem, New York. Offered here is an exceedingly rare display piece issued by Roy Campanella's Wines and Liquors in 1954. The promotional calendar, which features a photograph of Campanella's daughter, was issued by the store as a promotional giveaway during the holidays in December 1954. The printed photo caption reads "Seasons Greetings/From/Di Payton Campanella/For/All The Campanellas." Displayed below the photograph is the company's printed business information (name, phone number, address, etc.) and a tear-away calendar for 1955. This is the first example of this particular Roy Campanella Wines and Liquor calendar we have ever seen and, given its fragile nature, it's highly unlikely that many others have survived. The only other Roy Campanella Wines and Liquor calendar we have ever handled, dating from 1952, appeared as Lot 1338 in our April 2014 auction, where it realized $711. The display (10 x 16.75 inches), printed on thin cardboard stock, is designed with a hole at the top so that it can be hung on a wall (the hole has been torn through). Numerous moderate-to-heavy creases are evident, as are a few edge tears and minor stains. All of the calendar pages have been torn away with the exception of the final page for December 1955, which displays a diagonal tear. In Good condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $240
