1948 New York Yankees Ticket Stub - Babe Ruth's Final Appearance at Yankee Stadium!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,680
On June 13, 1948, the New York Yankees celebrated the 25th anniversary of the club's first World Championship in 1923. As part of the festivities, all of the surviving members of the 1923 team were honored in a special pre-game ceremony and then took part in a two-inning exhibition game against another team of Yankee old-timers. While all of the 1923 team members were greeted warmly by the crowd, the 50,000 fans in attendance had really come to see one man: Babe Ruth. The fabled "Bambino," his frame thin and his voice raspy as a result of cancer, made his final appearance at Yankee Stadium that day and said goodbye to his legion of fans. Ruth's last appearance that day was forever immortalized in Nat Fein's Pulitzer-prize winning photo, The Babe Bows Out. Ruth died just two months later on August 16th.
Offered here is a rare ticket stub from that historic day. The ticket, issued for a "Lower Box Seat," features the date, "June 13, 1948," printed on the front. This is one of only approximately five tickets we have ever seen from that day and the first we have ever offered. The ticket is accompanied by a number of vintage newspaper clippings chronicling the ceremony and Ruth's final appearance. It is also accompanied by a vintage, typewritten narrative by the original owner of the ticket detailing his or her experiences, before, during, and after the event. Apparently, the original ticket owner was either a friend or relative of one of the 1923 team members (they only refer to him as "Laddie") and he or she mentions that they ate dinner with Joe Dugan after the game. Both the narrative and clippings are affixed to vintage scrapbook pages. The ticket stub (1.5 x 3 inches) was also once affixed to an album page and features paper residue on the reverse. It also displays numerous tears which have been repaired on the reverse by clear tape. In Good condition overall. Together with a modern-day 8 x 10-inch photo of The Babe Bows Out. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,680
