Extraordinary 1948-1952 Cleveland Indians Pencil Clips Partial Set (60 Different)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,800

Collection of sixty different Cleveland Indians pencil clips issued between the years 1948 and 1952. Thought to be the brainchild of team owner Bill Veeck, each clip has a circular celluloid attachment featuring a portrait photo of a team member (very much like a traditional celluloid pin, but instead of having a pinback, each has a clip that attaches to a pencil). Different color schemes were used in each of the first three years: black in 1948, brown in 1949, and white in 1950. Blue was used in 1951 and 1952, but the 1951 and 1952 issues can be differentiated by the presence of a union label on the side of the celluloid piece for the 1951 clips (the label does not appear on the 1952 clips). The number of different clips issued each year also varied. According to the best information we could find, the number of different clips issued in each year is as follows: 1948 (20), 1949 (20), 1950 (19), 1951 (12), and 1952 (19). Therefore, a complete 1948-1952 set run consists of ninety clips. It should be noted that while a number of players in the offered collection are represented more than once, none is represented twice in the same year. As such, it includes no duplicates. The collection is comprised of the following (listed by year): 1948 (11): Bearden, Berardino, Boudreau, Clark, Doby, Feller, Judnich, Keltner, Muncrief, Tipton, and Tucker. 1949 (16): Bearden, Boudreau, Clark, Doby, Feller, Gordon, Gromek, Hegan, Keltner, Kennedy, Lemon, Mitchell, Paige, Vernon, Wynn, and Zoldak. 1950 (16): Avila, Benton, Boone, Boudreau, Clark, Doby, Feller, Garcia, Gromek, Hegan, Kennedy, Lemon, Mitchell, Murray, Rosen, and Wynn. 1951 (11): Avila, Boone, Doby, Easter, Feller, Hegan, Kennedy, Lemon, Mitchell, Rosen, and Wynn. 1952 (6): Avila, Doby, Feller, Gromek, Hegan, and Mitchell. A few of the clips display varying degrees of oxidation to the metal component, but the celluloid portraits are all in Excellent to Mint condition overall. This is a simply outstanding and extremely advanced collection of these scarce clips that are seldom seen in such a large and carefully assembled group. Also included is a circa 1935 Detroit Tigers "Iffy Club" clip (Ex-Mt). Size: 4.5 inches top to bottom, with the celluloid attachment measuring .75 inches in diameter. Total: 61 clips (60 Indians clips and 1 Detroit Tigers clip). From the personal collection of Dr. Paul Muchinsky, legendary pioneer collector and author of Baseball Pinback Buttons: A Photographically Illustrated Compendium and Price Guide. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $1,800
