1949 Joe DiMaggio Day First-Day Cover
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $120
On October 1, 1949, the New York Yankees honored the legendary "Yankee Clipper," Joe DiMaggio, with a special day. It was during his thank-you speech to the crowd, that DiMaggio uttered the classic line, "I'd like to thank the Good Lord for making me a Yankee." That printed quote now hangs in the tunnel from the locker room to the field at Yankee Stadium. In celebration of that day, the Yankees distributed commemorative first-day covers to the fans, all of which had been already postmarked and canceled at the Bronx Central Post Office that morning. Offered here is one of those special "DiMaggio Day" first-day covers, complete with its original insert slip. The envelope (6.5 x 3.5 inches) features a portrait image of DiMaggio, the date, and DiMaggio's blue-ink facsimile signature on the front. In Excellent condition. The special insert (6 x 3 inches), on thin paper stock, notes that Yankee announcer Mel Allen was the Chairman of Joe DiMaggio Day and that the covers were the compliments of "C. George" of 112 Palmetto St., Brooklyn." Two faint tone lines and a small tear along the top border. Vg-Ex. Total: 2 items (first-day cover and paper insert). Reserve $100. Estimate $200+.
