1888 N321 S. F. Hess California League - J. Smith

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,440

Extremely rare sample card of J. Smith from the N321 S. F. Hess California League series. Featuring full-color illustrations on front, the forty-card N321 series depicts players from the California League and is one of the few color issues of the nineteenth century. The player name and position is printed along the top border, with California League arced over the player image and advertising for S. F. Hess & Co's. Creole Cigarettes along the bottom border. The offered card is clean and crisp, free of any creases, with light, even wear at the corners, virtually perfect centering, and brilliant colors. Paper loss on the blank reverse contributes to the modest assigned grade of POOR 10 by SGC despite a Vg-Ex appearance from the front. This is a technically modest-in-grade but still extremely attractive example of one of nineteenth-century baseball-card collecting's most elusive sample cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
