1927 Christy Walsh Syndicate Photo with Ruth and Gehrig - PSA/DNA Type 1 - Used For Walsh's Book Adios to Ghosts

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,280

Original Christy Walsh Syndicate promotional photo (8 x 10 inches), taken during the 1927 World Series at Yankee Stadium, capturing Walsh posing in front of the grandstand with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Rogers Hornsby, Miller Huggins, John McGraw, Donnie Bush, Nick Altrock, and Fred Lieb. The photo is hand-lettered "1927 Yankees vs. Pittsburgh" in white along the base. Encapsulated and certified as an original Type I photo by PSA/DNA. The Christy Walsh Syndicate employed many of the top athletes in sports to write syndicated columns for newspapers across the country. Despite the fact that nearly all of the columns were ghostwritten, the celebrity bylines were extremely successful in attracting readers and the Christy Walsh Syndicate prospered for over two decades. In addition to founding the syndicate, Christy Walsh also served as Ruth's longtime business agent. Walsh annually produced display photographs of his writing syndicate taken at the World Series and distributed them as promotional vehicles for the business. This particular 1927 Walsh promotional photo is especially rare. The only other example of this photo that we have seen was a large-format version that appeared as Lot 614 in the Barry Halper auction (realized $7,475). Adding to the appeal of the offered photo is that it was obviously Walsh's personal copy. This very photo was used to produce the bookplate image that appears in Christy Walsh's 1937 book Adios to Ghosts, which is a history of his writing syndicate. That fact is evident by observing the numerous editorial and cropping lines on the front, with the image in the book conforming exactly to the crop marks seen here (the book photo omits Fred Lieb's image on the far left). Ideally, a copy of Adios to Ghosts accompanies the photo, and it is not just any copy but one personally inscribed by Christy Walsh to Yankees manager Joe McCarthy. Walsh has inscribed the book in blue fountain pen (grading "10") on the front flyleaf : "For/Joe McCarthy/A World's Champion in/more ways than one/Best always/Christy Walsh." The photo displays a number of flaws common to most working press photos, including edge tears, creases, pinholes, and editorial markings, as well as adhesive residue from having once been mounted in an album. In Very Good condition overall. The 44- page hardcover book (6.25 x 8 inches; no publisher listed) remains in Excellent condition. Total: 2 items (photo and book). Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,280
