1907 Chicago White Stockings "Champions" Large-Format Photographic Silk Banner

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,080

Rare and extraordinary large-format silk banner featuring a team portrait of the 1907 Chicago White Stockings, including team owner Charles Comiskey. This is a remarkable large-format silk display piece honoring the 1907 Chicago White Sox. All of the players are identified in print below the photo. "Champions American League 1907" is printed in faded gilt lettering along the top, while the bottom text reveals its method of distribution: "World's Champions - Compliments of Chicago Sporting Goods Manufacturing Company." It should be noted that the banner's proclamation of the White Sox as American League champions of 1907 is not in error. It was common practice during that era for pennant-winning clubs to be declared "champions" for the following season until they were officially dethroned. This silk is notable for both its size and rarity. Measuring 18.5 x 28 inches, the banner is a striking display piece that would command the attention of anyone passing by. As indicated, the banner was most likely distributed to local merchants by the Chicago Sporting Goods Manufacturing Company for retail display during the 1907 season. That limited regional distribution, coupled with the probability that most were probably simply discarded at the end of the year, possibly explains why this is the only example we have ever seen. The banner, which is toned, displays a number of large tears to the silk fabric, most notably along the top and base. Although technically in Good condition overall, the banner retains its extraordinary visual charm and is still perfect for display, as originally intended. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
