Pair of Original Christy Mathewson News Photos

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $840

Two original news photos capturing Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson. 1) Circa 1917 photo picturing Mathewson, as manager of the Cincinnati Reds, posing in front of the dugout with Edd Roush and Bill McKechnie (McKechnie's image, on the left, is only partially visible within the frame of the shot). An International Film Service Inc., stamp appears on the reverse. as do both the handwritten names (in pencil) of Mathewson and Roush. Three small white labels and tape remnants also appear on the reverse. Although not dated, McKechnie only played with Cincinnati in 1916 and 1917. The photo (8 x 10 inches) displays a number of edge tears and chips, editorial notations in the white margins, light creasing throughout, and a white label affixed to the right border. In Good to Very Good condition overall. 2) 1922 photo of Mathewson playing checkers with his father at his family's home in Factoryville, Pennsylvania. Credit stamps for both the Keystone Vew Co. of N. Y and The Cleveland News appears on the reverse, as does the date stamp "Aug 17 1922." The original Keystone news caption is affixed to the reverse, which, ironically, states that Mathewson has been "declared a victor over the dreaded disease tuberculosis, which he has fought against for two years at Saranac Lake, N. Y." The caption further adds that Mathewson left Saranac Lake to celebrate his forty-second birthday with his parents. Unfortunately, Mathewson was not cured and succumbed to the disease just three years later. Accompanied by an LOA from the highly respected photo experts at RMY Auctions designating it as a "Vintage 1" photo. The photo (8.5 x 6.5 inches) displays three pinholes, a tiny corner chip in the upper left, and very light editorial outlining to the images. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Total: 2 photos.   Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $840
