1913 Chicago Cubs "A Yard of the National Game" Team Panoramic Print with Evers and Bresnahan

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,920

This elegantly designed composite panorama, titled "A Yard of the National Game," was issued to commemorate the Chicago Cubs 1913 season. This tremendous display piece is one of several similarly designed Chicago Cubs composite panoramas (all of which are quite rare), each titled "A Yard of the National Game," produced during the early 1900s. (These were produced over a period of several years and the design and players changed slightly from year to year.) The offered example features a majestic panoramic photograph (measuring 25 x 4.25 inches) of a Chicago Cubs game in progress in the center. Above the photo are individual, full-length images of twenty-seven team members, each pictured in uniform, including player/manager Johnny Evers and Roger Bresnahan. Twenty-five of those players are pictured again, either below or next to the panoramic photo, posing together in small groups. Also included are portrait images of Charles Murphy (team president), Charles Thomas (team secretary), Johnny Evers (manager), and Charles Williams (team treasurer). A quartet of illustrated bears, in both the lower left and right corners, completes the attractive design. The text below the panorama reads "A Yard of the National Game/Home of the Record-Breaking Cubs/Champions of the National League-1906-1907-1908-1910 Champions of the World-1907-1908." Produced by E. T. Johnson & Co. (publisher of the Cubs' official scorecards), as noted in print along the base. The composite panorama (49.5 x 15 inches) displays a small stain in the lower left corner, light foxing along the right border, and a few moderate creases along both the left and right borders, including a seven-inch crease on the left that affects the first four player images at the top of the piece. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. It should be note that these large "A Yard of the National Game" prints are rarely found in pristine condition and the offered piece is actually one of the finest examples of its kind that we have seen. Framed to total dimension of 52 x 17 inches. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be a shipping charge for this lot (which will vary depending upon where it is being shipped). The shipping charge will be billed separately from the auction invoice.   Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,920
