1909 E102 Anonymous "Set of 25" Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,160

Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. This extremely attractive and rare E102 "Set of 25" candy card features the legendary Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in a horizontal throwing pose. This is a beautiful example of one of Mathewson's most classic cards. While Christy Mathewson was included in many candy-card issues from the 1910 era, this horizontal throwing pose of Mathewson is considered by many to be the most attractive of all Mathewson caramel-card designs. It's easy to see why. It's just a great-looking card. The manufacturer of E102 is unknown. The fronts are identical in design to the E101 "Set of 50" related issues. The offered card is bright and clean, with bold colors, near-perfect centering, and light, even wear to the corners. Perfectly clean both front and back, with faint traces of color bleed at the bottom of the reverse. Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. Because they were issued with caramels one card per package and sold to children (as opposed to being sold to adults with tobacco), they tend to survive in a much lower grade. This is a outstanding example of one of caramel-card collecting's true gems and one of Christy Mathewson's most classic cards.  Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,160
