1897 University of Pennsylvania Baseball Cabinet-Photo Collection (8)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,200

Collection of eight cabinet photos, each picturing a player on the 1897 University of Pennsylvania baseball team. Five different players are represented here, with each player pictured standing in uniform, wearing his team sweater (three players are pictured twice, each in a slightly different pose). The photographer's credit, "Gilbert & Bacon" (1030 Chestnut St., Philadelphia), appears along the base of the mount and on the reverse. Although no team identification is listed, the large "P" on each player's sweater, along with the fact that three of the players are identified by name and position in vintage black ink along the base of the mount, helped us determine both the school and year. The three players identified are "Lee Voight R[F]," "J. Huston C.F.," and "R. M. Jackson L.F." Research indicates that these three only played together at the University of Pennsylvania in 1897. (Jackson and Voigt were seniors; Huston a junior.) Both Jackson and Voight are represented twice in separate cabinet photos (each is only identified in writing on the one). Unfortunately, we have not been able to identify the remaining two players represented here. Three of the cabinet cards (4.25 x 6.5 inches) display light handling wear and are in Excellent condition overall. One displays light foxing and is in Very Good condition. The remaining three are in Good condition overall, with two of the photos darkly toned and the other displaying a number of stains and abrasions. Total: 8 cabinet cards (five different players).   Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,200
