1933 Hugh Duffy Signed Letter
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $720
One-page typed letter, dated September 22, 1933, signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Hugh Duffy. In his letter, on "Boston American League Baseball Company" stationery, Duffy writes to "Hon. Charles A. Lyons" and offers his regrets that he cannot attend an old-timers' game. In full: "Your Honor: Owing to a previous engagement on the 24th I find it will be impossible for me to attend the Old-Timers Game at Marlboro. I will try and locate Mitchell, Slattery, Ryan, and Evers and turn over your invitation to them. However, I want to thank you for inviting me. Very truly yours, Hugh Duffy [signed]." Duffy's signature has been scripted in black fountain pen and grades "9."
Duffy was employed by the Red Sox from 1921 until the time of his death in 1954 at the age of eighty-seven, during which time he served as manager, scout, front-office employee, spring-training instructor, coach, and general goodwill ambassador. It was his skill on the diamond, however, which earned him Hall of Fame honors in 1945. Duffy was one of the greatest players of the nineteenth century and spent the better part of his major league career in Boston as a member of both the American Association Reds (1891) and the National League Beaneaters (1892-1900). During his nine seasons with the Beaneaters, Duffy led the National League in batting twice, including a record .440 during his Triple Crown season of 1894. Duffy retired in 1906 with a .325 career average, which ties him for thirty-seventh on the all-time list. The letter (8.5 x 6.5 inches), which has been trimmed along the base to its current dimensions, displays numerous horizontal and vertical folds, as well as a few scattered areas of light discoloration. In Very Good condition overall (without reference to the trim). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $720
