1932 Mordecai Brown Endorsed Check
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,040
Check issued by "J. S. Young Jr" to Hall of Fame pitcher Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown, endorsed by Brown on the reverse. The check, dated June 7, 1932, and drawn on the Farmers State Bank of Lawrenceville, Illinois, is made out to Mordecai Brown in the amount of $200 and is signed by a representative of Young along the base. (This is actually a company check, as the notation "Oil Producer and Contractor" is printed below Young's name at the top.) Brown has magnificently endorsed the check on the reverse in black fountain pen (grading a perfect “10”). Autograph collectors have always placed a special premium on checks due to their inherent authenticity and this example is no exception. The signature of Brown, who passed away in 1948, is rare in any form and highly prized by collectors today. Authenticity and rarity factors notwithstanding, this check is even more significant due to the fact that, to date, no Mordecai Brown personal checks have ever surfaced within the hobby. The only examples we have seen are a few endorsed checks such as this. Therefore, in the specialized field of check collecting, the offered example represents the best alternative with regard to Brown. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellations and perforations as well as a very light vertical center fold and slightly heavier diagonal crease in the right quadrant. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,040
