Hall of Famer Signed Performance Contract Collection (7) Including 1979 Willie Mays Saturday Night Live Contract
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $360
This collection of seven contracts, each signed by a different Hall of Fame baseball player, is highlighted by a Saturday Night Live contract for Willie Mays to appear in a filmed segment on "Weekend Update" on March 23, 1979. This was the film segment in which Hispanic baseball player "Chico Esquela," played by Garrett Morris, attempted his comeback at Mets training camp. Chico Escuela was one of the iconic SNL characters during the early years, best remembered for his catch phrase, "Beisbol beeen berry, berry good to me!" The four-page fold-over contract, between Mays and NBC, calls for Mays to receive $427.50 for his role in the segment. Mays' signature, scripted in blue ink, grades "10." 8.5 x 11 inches. Ex-Mt. The remaining six Hall of Famer contracts in this collection, all of which are similarly for interesting work unrelated to baseball (most for personal appearances or film work), are as follows: 1) One-page MGM contract, dated 11/15/48, for Bill Dickey to appear in the Monty Stratton Story. Signed in blue ink ("10"). 8.25 x 11 inches. Vg-Ex, with notebook holes at the top. 2) One-page NBC contract, dated 5/10/56, for Leo Durocher to continue his employment with the company in an executive role. Signed in blue ink ("8"). 8.5 x 11 inches. On onionskin. Vg, with a notebook hole and staple holes in the upper left corner. 3) One-page contract, dated 10/13/71, for Willie Stargell to appear at the opening of a Jamesway store. Signed in black ink ("8/9"). 8.5 x 11 inches. Ex. Accompanied by two related unsigned documents. 4) One-page contract, undated, between Billy Williams and Frank Scott Associates. The agreement calls for Williams to appear at an American Airlines golf tournament held during the first week of February in 1972. Signed in blue ink ("10"). 8.5 x 11 inches Vg-Ex, with edge tears. 5) Five-page contract, dated 8/14/72, for Joe Torre to appear on the television program Sports Challenge. Signed in blue ink ("10"). 8.5 x 11 inches. Ex, with notebook holes at the top border. 6) One-page contract, dated 4/9/90, for Dave Winfield to appear on the Today show. This is actually a declaration form stating that Winfield has not received any additional compensation for appearing on the program. Signed in blue ink ("10"). 8.5 x 11 inches. Ex. Total: 7 contracts. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $360
