Mickey Mantle Signed Painting "1954 Topps Card" - Attributed to Wayne Prokopiak
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $480
Oil-on-canvas painting attributed to noted sports artist Wayne Prokopiak, signed by Mantle in blue Sharpie (grading "8/9") along the base. Although the painting is not signed by the artist, the style is immediately recognizable as that of Prokopiak. We also know that Prokopiak was privately commissioned in the 1990s to create a series of original Mickey Mantle paintings, of which we are certain this is one. The appeal of this painting, of course, is that pictures what Mickey Mantle's 1954 Topps baseball would probably have looked like if it had been issued that year. (Mantle was under exclusive contract with Bowman in 1954 and 1955; therefore Topps was unable to include Mantle in either of its card issues for those years.) Wayne Prokopiak, who has created many memorable sports lithographs, is best known today for his work with the Boxing Hall of Fame. Prokopiak was the official artist for the Boxing Hall of Fame during the 1990s and was annually commissioned to create the cover illustrations for its induction programs. This is a truly unique Mantle painting, and one that should especially appeal to card collectors. The painting measures 9 x12 inches and has been framed to a total dimension of 11.5 x 14.5 inches. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and LOA from James Spence/JSA.
