Mickey Mantle Signed Painting "1952 Bowman Card" by Wayne Prokopiak

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $840

Original oil painting on canvas of Mickey Mantle, by noted sports artist Wayne Prokopiak, signed by Mantle in blue Sharpie. This unique artwork is an exact reproduction of Mantle's image from his 1952 Bowman baseball card and has been beautifully inscribed "Best Wishes - Mickey Mantle." Both the salutation and inscription have been boldly scripted across his image and grade "9." Signed and dated (1990) by the artist in the lower right. Wayne Prokopiak, who has created many memorable sports lithographs, is best known today for his work with the Boxing Hall of Fame. Prokopiak was the official artist for the Hall during the 1990s and was annually commissioned to create the cover illustrations for its Hall of Fame induction programs. This particular piece appeared as Lot 596 in REA's April 2006 auction (realized $1,276) and, as noted in the catalog description at the time, was specially commissioned by the original owner in the 1990s. As such, it remains both a unique and and highly desirable Mantle signed artwork depicting one of the classic Bowman cards of the era. The painting measures 18 x 27 inches and has been handsomely framed to slightly larger dimensions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and LOA from James Spence/JSA.  Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $840
