500 Home Run Club Ball - 19 of the Possible 26 Signatures, Including Mantle and Williams!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,000

Official National League (Feeney) baseball signed in blue ink by nineteen of the twenty-six members of baseball's legendary 500 Home Run Club. This is a remarkable 500 Home Run Club ball in that it lacks only the signatures of Manny Ramirez, Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa, and Albert Pujols (all of whom are still alive and accessible to autograph collectors) for modern-day completeness. (Ruth, Foxx, and Ott, the first three players to reach the 500 home-run plateau, passed away long before such theme balls were in vogue among collectors.) The signatures present here are those of Mickey Mantle (sweet spot), Ted Williams (sweet spot), Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Reggie Jackson, Jim Thome, Frank Robinson, Eddie Mathews, Mike Schmidt, Frank Thomas (twice), Alex Rodriguez, Ernie Banks, Harmon Killebrew, Ken Griffey Jr., Willie McCovey, Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, and Mark McGwire. Signatures range from "7" to "10," averaging "9." The ball remains in Excellent to Mint condition. This is an outstanding 500 Home Run Club ball and one that with some effort could certainly be completed by a dedicated collector. It should be noted that in our May 2010 auction, Robert Edward Auctions offered a 500 Home Run Club ball with a remarkable twenty-one of the then twenty-five possible signatures (missing only Bonds) that realized a final sale price of $9,988 (Lot 1129). Given that result, and the enormous significance and extreme rarity of a fully signed modern-day example (we've never seen one), the quest to obtain the final four signatures on this ball (and there is room to add additional signatures) could prove to be a wise investment in time and resources for the winning bidder. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA.  Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,000
