1968 Al Barlick Signed Major League Umpire Contract

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,080

One-page umpire's contract, dated January 10, 1968, between Hall of Fame umpire Al Barlick and the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs, signed in blue ink by "Albert Barlick" (grading "9/10") and "Warren Giles" ("9"), as president of the league. The one-year agreement calls for Barlick to receive a salary of $24,750, plus an additional $5,000 for the season to cover "hotel, meal, taxi, tip, cleaning, laundry, and other expenses incidental to umpire travel." The league also agrees to reimburse Barlick for all of his transportation expenses related to his job. An added clause at the end of the agreement provides for Barlick to receive $28 per day for living expenses while working during spring training. Barlick was a National League umpire for twenty-seasons beginning in 1940. During his tenure he worked seven World Series and seven All-Star Games. Following his retirement he worked as both an umpire scout and supervisor. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1989. This contract almost certainly originated long ago from a larger group of Barlick contracts that once resided in the legendary Barry Halper Collection. Halper had purchased all of the contracts, along with Barlick's last umpire uniform, chest protector, whisk broom, strike indicator, etc., directly from Barlick in 1989. Despite the fact that all of the Barlick items in the Halper Collection (including the nineteen contracts) were sold together as one Lot in the historic 1999 Barry Halper sale (Lot 1209), this is the first individual Barlick contract we have seen come up for auction since that time. (It is also possible that the Halper Barlick collection remains intact, and this contract is a second example, as at least two copies of each contract are signed upon execution.) In either case, it is very rare, an ideal Barlick signed item, and a prize Hall of Famer contract! The contract (8.5 x 14 inches) displays three horizontal folds and a staple hole in the upper left corner. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA.  Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,080
