1944-1969 Warren Giles Handwritten and Signed Letter Collection (14)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $360
Collection of fourteen letters, eight handwritten and six typed, each signed by Hall of Fame executive Warren C. Giles (1896-1979), former president of the National League. All of these letters originate from Giles' longtime friend Franklin "Heck" Roelle, with all but four of them addressed to Roelle. Six of the letters are accompanied by their original mailing envelopes. Although not all are dated, the ten letters addressed to Roelle appear to have been written during the 1960s, when Giles was still president of the National League (Giles was president from 1951 to1969). The remaining four letters, all of which are typed on onionskin and represent office copies, date from 1944 and have been signed by Giles in his capacity as president of the American Distilling Company. Even though the letters to Roelle are personal in nature, a few include baseball content, with Giles keeping his friend abreast of the latest happenings in the National League. Of the ten letters to Roelle, seven are signed simply "Warren," two are signed with just his initials ("WCG"), and one is unsigned. Of the remaining four typewritten letters, two are signed "Warren Giles" and two are signed "WCG." All of the signatures, scripted in a variety of inks, grade between "8" and "10," averaging "9." Letters vary in size from 4.5 x 6.5 to 8 x 12.5 inches. Of the ten letters written to Rolle five are written on official National League letterhead, two are written on Giles' personal stationery, and three on either lined or unlined blank sheets of paper. All of the letters are written on a single sheet (many front and back), with the exception of a lengthy four-page handwritten letter (dated 3/25/69) and a two-page typewritten letter (dated 2/2/61). All of the letters display one or more mailing folds, with two of the letters written to Roelle also displaying light staining. Aside from the staining, the ten letters to Roelle remain in Excellent condition overall. The four letters on onionskin display a number of edge tears, creasing, and staining, and are in Good condition overall. The six original mailing envelopes are in Very Good condition overall. Total: 14 Warren Giles signed letters (six with their original mailing envelopes). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $360
