Autographed 1964 Topps #50 Mickey Mantle Blank Back
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,440
Extremely rare blank-back proof card example of 1964 Topps Mickey Mantle (card #50), signed by Mantle in black fine-point marker (grading "9/10") on the front. This card would be a very desirable and noteworthy proof card even if it were not signed! Ideally, Mantle has signed the card atop his image, with the signature contrasting beautifully against the light background. The card displays a light semicircular crease in the upper right quadrant, but it can only be seen when viewed at a certain angle and is quite unobtrusive. While technically in Good condition, the card is closer to Excellent in its overall appearance and presents beautifully. It is not an accident that such a rare Mantle card happens to be signed: The consignor of this card, a longtime collector who was very active in the 1980s and early 1990s, collected two areas: unusual Topps test/proof items, and autographed items of a few great Yankees legends (such as Mantle, probably obtained in person). In this one case, he had one of his unusual card rarities signed. Mantle Topps proof cards from the 1960s are naturally rare, and not surprisingly this is the first signed example we can recall ever seeing. This is both a very interesting and, almost certainly, a unique Mantle signed card. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,440
