1959 Pee Wee Reese Signed Los Angeles Dodgers Coaches Contract
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $360
Four-page fold-over contract, dated April 9, 1959, between Harold "Pee Wee" Reese and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Inc., signed in black ink by both "Harold H. Reese" (grading "9") and "E. J. Bavasi" ("10"), president of the club. The one-year agreement, which calls for Reese to serve as a coach with the club, has been signed by Reese but has not been filled out regarding salary or term, or been signed by a witness or the league president. There was obviously some informality to the coach contract-signing process that is different than if Reese were signing as a player! This document was signed just two days prior to opening day and marked Reese's first season as coach for the team. The Dodgers went on to be World Champs in 1959, and presumably Reese's coaching played a role. Reese was one of the top shortstops of his era and helped lead the Dodgers to seven pennants and one World Championship during his sixteen-year tenure with the club. He finished his career with .269 lifetime average and 2,170 hits. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984. Baseball contracts of Hall of Fame players are rare. This is only the third Reese contract we have ever offered . The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays a few light surface wrinkles and is in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
