1954 Mel Ott Signed Store-Model Glove
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $960
Mel Ott endorsed MacGregor store-model glove, signed by Ott on the front thumb. Ott's signature, which is scripted in black fountain pen, has faded slightly but is still clearly legible and grades "5." The right-handed fielder's glove features both the company name ("MacGregor") and model number ("G122") stamped in silver in the pocket. Ott's facsimile signature ("Melvin Ott") is stamped in silver on the pinky finger. This is the first example of a Mel Ott signed glove we have ever seen, let alone handled. Ott's signature in general is scarce due to his untimely death in 1958 at the age of forty-nine. Single-signed balls, bats, gloves, etc., are rarer still, making this an extremely desirable and seldom-seen Mel Ott signed item. According to the MacGregor catalogs, the Mel Ott model "G122" glove was only produced in 1954, so it was obviously signed by Ott during the last few years of his life. Ott led the National League in home runs on six different occasions and was the first National League player, and third overall, to reach the historic 500 Home Run plateau. In addition to his slugging prowess, Ott was also a fine hitter, as evidenced by his .304 lifetime average. An eleven-time All-Star (out of a possible fifteen seasons), Ott helped lead the Giants to three pennants and one World Championship over the course of his twenty-two seasons. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1951. The glove displays wear commensurate with its age and former use, including the faded name of a former owner on the reverse interior leather. A few stray ink marks appear on the wrist strap. All of the leather remains soft and supple, and the glove is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $960
