1910 E98 Anonymous "Set of 30" SGC-Graded Complete Set (30) - All Orange Background!
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $7,200
Presented is a complete set consisting of all thirty cards from the E98 “Set of 30” candy-card issue, highlighted by seventeen Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Cy Young. All thirty cards are graded and encapsulated by SGC. The manufacturer of E98 is unknown, and the set may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E94 specifically); this is an entirely different set even though it uses many of the same subjects and poses. For many years, E98s were among the scarcest of the 1910-era caramel cards, but the recent “Black Swamp Find” has changed the population dramatically. E98s have always been very desirable, and their increased availability and noteworthiness due to the find may have actually increased the demand as more collectors have become familiar with the set. Seventeen Hall of Famers are featured within this set, which also drives its popularity. E98s are found with four different background colors: blue, green, orange, and red. All cards in this set feature an orange background (complete sets of green and red are offered in this auction as well, each part of the same master-set collection consigned to this auction). Prior to this offering, we had only sold one complete set in the past twenty years! SGC Grading Composite: Three VG 40: Brown (HOF), Chase, and Meyers. Ten GOOD 30: Bender (HOF), Bridwell, Clarke (HOF), Evers (HOF), Ford, Lajoie (HOF), Mullin, Tenny, Vaughn, and Wagner (HOF). Six FAIR 20: Collins (HOF), Coombs, Davis, Kling, McLean, and Young (HOF). Nine POOR 10: Bresnahan (HOF), Chance (HOF), Cobb (HOF), Dooin, Jennings (HOF), Mathewson (HOF), McGraw (HOF), Tinker (HOF), and Walsh (HOF). Two Authentic: Dahlen and Mack (HOF). Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. Because they were issued with caramels one card per package and sold to children (as opposed to being sold to adults with tobacco), they also tend to survive in a much lower grade. This is an outstanding complete set of this desirable caramel-card issue, loaded with Hall of Famers. The equivalent SMR value (factoring in the six half-grades at the lower whole-grade level and excluding the two cards graded Authentic) is $7,075. Total: 30 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+.
