1940 Babe Ruth Signed Academy of Sport Certificate

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,200

1940 Academy of Sport certificate, issued at the New York World's Fair, beautifully signed by Baseball Hall of Fame outfielder Babe Ruth and also signed by Football Hall of Fame center/linebacker Mel Hein. Both signatures have been boldly scripted in black fountain pen and grade "9/10." The certificate, which is dated October 16, 1940, is also signed in black fountain pen ("8") by Christy Walsh, in his capacity as the "Director of Sports - New York World's Fair" (Walsh was also Ruth's business agent). This particular certificate was issued to "Howard Good" and certifies that he "attended instructions" at the Academy of Sport and "is hereby commended for his interest in Sport and his intentions to practice the ideals of Sportsmanship and Clean Competition as exemplified by the Baseball and Football leaders who have instructed him." These large-format certificates (10.25 x 8 inches) were presented to students who attended classes in two or more sports clinics, and as such, they are much rarer than the more commonly seen Academy of Sport laurel cards issued to students who attended a single daily session. Ruth, of course, was the premier instructor at the Academy, which was in operation during both years of the Fair (1939 and 1940). The World's Fair officially closed on October 27, 1940, making this certificate one of the last examples ever issued. The certificate, printed on paper stock, is lightly toned and displays a number of small edge tears. In Very Good condition overall and complete with its original gold seal and ribbon. Full LOA by PSA/DNA and LOA from James Spence/JSA.
