1939 Play Ball #51 Mel Ott Signed Baseball Card
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,560
Exceptional and extremely desirable signed example of Mel Ott's 1939 Play Ball card #51. Ott's signature has been flawlessly scripted in blue ink on the front, with the signature grading "10." Ott was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1951, but died just seven years later in 1958 at the age of forty-nine. Therefore, Hall of Fame autograph collectors had just a short window of time to acquire his signature. Signed baseball cards of Ott are particularly rare. 1939 Play Balls rarely survive in high grade, in part because the paper stock is so prone to wear, especially at the corners. This card is no exception and displays normal handling wear at the corners and a tiny area of adhesive residue near the top right corner of the reverse. Technically in Very Good condition, but Excellent to Mint in its overall appearance. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,560
