1939 Hall of Fame Signed First Day Covers Collection (16)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,440
Collection of sixteen 1939 Baseball Centennial first-day covers, each signed on the front by one or more players. A total of forty-eight Hall of Fame signatures, representing thirty-two different players, are featured in this group, as well as those of many former stars. There is even one signed by three members of the football Hall of Fame who also played/umpired in major league baseball: George Halas (Yankees), Cal Hubbard (a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame as an umpire), and Ernie Nevers (Browns). Each envelope is postmarked "Jun 12 1939 Cooperstown N. Y." and has one or more Baseball Centennial stamps affixed in the upper right corner. The signatures, which have been penned in a variety of inks (including Sharpie), range from "8" to "10," averaging "9/10." It must be noted that the signature examples of both Burleigh Grimes and Rudy York in this collection have been deemed "clubhouse" versions by JSA (the Grimes signature is not included in the Hall of Fame count total).
