1910 E98 Anonymous "Set of 30" SGC-Graded Near-Complete Set (26/30) - All Red Background!

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $3,900

Presented is a near-complete set consisting of twenty-six (out of thirty) cards from the E98 “Set of 30” candy-card issue, highlighted by thirteen Hall of Famers, including Christy Mathewson, Nap Lajoie, and Frank Chance. Missing only Brown, Cobb, Wagner, and Young for completion, all of which appear individually in this auction. All twenty-six cards are graded and encapsulated by SGC. The manufacturer of E98 is unknown, and the set may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E94 specifically); this is an entirely different set even though it uses many of the same subjects and poses. For many years, E98s were among the scarcest of the 1910-era caramel cards, but the recent “Black Swamp Find” has changed the population dramatically. E98s have always been very desirable, and their increased availability and noteworthiness due to the find may have actually increased the demand as more collectors have become familiar with the set. Seventeen Hall of Famers are featured in a complete set, which also drives its popularity. E98s are found with four different background colors: blue, green, orange, and red. All cards in this set feature a red background (complete sets of green and orange are offered in this auction as well, each part of the same master-set collection consigned to this auction). Prior to this offering, we had only sold one complete set in the past twenty years! SGC Grading Composite: One EX+ 70: Bender. One VG/EX 50: Clarke (HOF). One VG+ 45: Myers. Three VG 40: Chance (HOF), Ford, and McLean. Six GOOD 30: Dooin, Jennings (HOF), McGraw (HOF), Mullin, Tenny, and Tinker (HOF). Six FAIR 20: Chase, Dahlen, Davis, Evers (HOF), Kling, and Walsh (HOF). Seven POOR 10: Bresnahan (HOF), Collins (HOF), Coombs, Lajoie (HOF), Mack (HOF), Mathewson (HOF), and Vaughn. One Authentic: Bridwell. Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. Because they were issued with caramels one card per package and sold to children (as opposed to being sold to adults with tobacco), they also tend to survive in a much lower grade. This is an outstanding near-complete set of this desirable caramel-card issue, loaded with Hall of Famers. The equivalent SMR value (factoring in the eight half-grades at the lower whole-grade level and excluding the one card graded Authentic) is $5,245. Total: 26 cards.  Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $3,900
