Circa 1930s Autograph-Album Pages - Numerous Baseball Signatures Including Lazzeri, Wheat, and Moe Berg

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $840

Collection of four autograph album pages dating from the 1920s and 1930s, plus an additional sheet which appears to date from a slightly later time period, each signed by famous ballplayers and various celebrities. Four of the sheets, which are lined, originate from a guest book kept by the owner of an Italian restaurant in Washington, D.C. Many of the entries are dated, which allows for the general 1920s to 1930s attribution. All of the pages have been signed in black fountain pen on the front and reverse, with each of the signatures grading "9 " or "10." (Three pages have been signed on the front and back; the other "page" is actually two pages glued together, signed on each side.) A total of fifty-six signatures appear on the four pages, including those of fifteen different baseball players: Tony Lazzeri, Zack Wheat, Joe Cronin (inscribed "In order to hit the curve, low outside, eat Louis' raviolis"), Moe Berg (inscribed "Spaghetti dinners come la Beatrice di Dante"), Joe Dugan, Mark Koenig, Spence Adams, Muddy Ruel, Roger Peckinpaugh, Jack Quinn (twice), Bill Wambsgans, Sam Jones, Ira Flagstead, Fred Hofmann, and Dud Branom. Other notables include Cesar Romero (actor, played the Joker on the Batman television series), Whitey Kaufman (band leader), Giovanni Martinelli (opera singer), Joe Verdi (actor), and Eddie Moran (actor). The pages (7.25 x 9.25) are all moderately toned and display rough left borders resulting from their having been torn from the book, as well as a few light stains. In Very Good condition overall. The final piece is an unlined sheet (8.25 x 8.5 inches) featuring twelve black fountain-pen signatures, including Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack (signed "Mr.+ Mrs. Connie Mack"), Celeste Holm (actress), Marjorie Weaver (actress), Lewis E. Lawes (warden of Sing Sing prison), and Countess Valentina Sforza (wife of Italian diplomat Carlo Sforza). Signatures all grade "9" or "10." The sheet has been trimmed along the left, right, and bottom borders; otherwise it is in Excellent condition. Total: 5 items. LOA from James Spence/JSA.  Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $840
