1931/1942 Babe Ruth Signed Golf Pass in Framed Display
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,160
Presented is an outstanding Babe Ruth signed framed display! Diamond-shaped golf pass signed in black fountain pen (grading "8") on the reverse by Babe Ruth. The lettering on the front of the pass reads "St. Petersburg/Open/Golf/Tournament/Feb. 20, 21, 22/Chamber/of/Commerce," while an overprint, in red, reads "Lakewood Estates/February 20." Lakewood Estates (known today as St. Petersburg Country Club) is one of a number of golf courses located in St. Petersburg. Obviously, the "Open Golf Tournament" was held at a number of locations, with Lakewood Estates hosting the first round on February 20. Unfortunately, no year is listed, but if we assume that the Open was held on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, then this pass most likely dates from either 1931 or 1942 (the only years between 1930 and 1947 in which February 20th fell on a Friday). Ruth was an avid golfer, both during and after his career, and probably a frequent visitor to Lakewood Estates, especially since the Yankees trained in St. Petersburg every spring between the years 1925 and 1961, with the exception of the years 1943-1945 (because of travel restrictions during the war), and 1951. The pass (3 x 3 inches) is in apparent Excellent to Mint condition and has been matted and framed together with a color copy of the front of the pass, a modern 8 x 10 inch photograph of Babe Ruth, and a descriptive plaque. Total dimensions: 36 x 24 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,160
