Circa 1929 Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $9,000
Official International League (Knappe) ball signed in black fountain pen by Yankees teammates Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Benny Bengough. Each signature sits on a separate side panel, with both the Ruth and Gehrig signatures grading "7" and Bengough's signature grading "6." It should be noted that even though this ball was produced specifically for International League play, it also displays the "Official National League" stamping on the opposite sweet spot (common for official minor-league balls at the time). Ruth, Gehrig, and Bengough played together on the Yankees between the years 1923 and 1930, but since this ball dates to the 1928-1933 manufacturing period it seems highly probable that the signatures were obtained sometime between the years 1928 and 1930. Ruth/Gehrig signed balls have always been, and probably will always be, the most desirable of all dual-signed balls. Although technically this isn't a dual-signed Ruth/Gehrig ball because of the presence of the Bengough signature (and Bengough, of course, is a very desirable signature in his own right as a key member of the 1927 Yankees), it does feature outstanding signature examples of the pair and remains an exceptional display piece. The ball displays light-to-moderate toning, including a few tiny areas of dark discoloration on the panel bearing the International League president's signature, and a small blemish on the Ruth panel. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $9,000
