1928 Multisigned Ball with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tris Speaker, Eddie Collins, and Bill McGowan
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,800
Whether it was by sheer luck or extraordinary foresight, this official American League (Barnard) ball features the blue fountain-pen signatures of five future Hall of Famers: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tris Speaker, Eddie Collins, and umpire Bill McGowan. Surprisingly, the signature of Speaker (grading "5/6") sits upon the sweet spot, while Ruth's ("7/8") appears on the north panel. (Speaker almost certainly signed the ball first!) The remaining signatures are each located on a separate side panel and grade as follows: Gehrig ("5/6"), Collins ("6/7"), and McGowan ("5," includes the personalization "To Bill Milfield"). Based upon the manufacturer's stampings, this ball can be conclusively dated to the 1928 season. As such, it seems almost certain that the ball was obtained at a game between the New York Yankees (Ruth and Gehrig) and Philadelphia Athletics (Speaker and Collins) in which McGowan was one of the umpires. The ball has been coated with a heavy layer of protective shellack, otherwise it remains in Excellent to Mint condition, with extremely bold manufacturer's stampings. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
