1911 "Baseball Bats" Candy Frank Chance
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $600
Extremely rare vintage candy card featuring Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Frank Chance. Originally issued in 1911 on the back panel of "Baseball Bats" penny candy, these unusual cards are so rare they were never even catalogued by Burdick in the ACC, but if they had been, they would have been "E" cards. The blank-backed card measures approximately 1.75 x 2.75 inches and features a black-and-white player photo framed by orange borders. The image of Chance is surrounded by a bright red background, although some cards from this series feature black-and-white backgrounds. Chance's name and team are printed in black letters along the bottom of the image. The offered card is graded FAIR 20 by SGC due to vertical creasing visible on the card. It is otherwise crisp and clean, with full orange borders (which is often not the case with this issue), a quality that makes it particularly desirable as a sample. This is a rare and extremely interesting vintage candy card from one of the most obscure sets of the deadball era. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $600
