1909-1916 PC758 Max Stein Postcard Christy Mathewson
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,920
Outstanding sample card of Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson (New York Giants) from the rare and highly regarded PC758 Max Stein Postcards set issued from 1909 to 1916. Baseball photographer Max Stein's classic photo-finish postcards are among the most revered of all early twentieth-century postcards. Mathewson is ideally depicted in a pitching pose. Graded GOOD 2 (MK) by PSA. The image on the card is bright and crisp, with light wear to the corners (more in the upper left) and faint traces of writing in the light part of the image along the left edge (which accounts for the qualifier). Part of the next card is showing along the right and bottom borders, which is common with cards from this issue. The card has never been mailed and has no writing on its traditional postcard reverse. Only five examples of Mathewson have ever been graded (at any level) by PSA and SGC. An ideal sample card featuring one of the game's most legendary stars, from one of the most unusual and substantial of all 1910-era baseball postcard issues. Dimensions: 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,920
