1909-1911 M101-2 Sporting News Collection (65) Including Jackson, Cobb, and Wagner
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $7,200
Outstanding collection of sixty-five different (of 100 in the set) M101-2 Sporting News supplements, in high grade for this issue, highlighted by twenty-eight premiums featuring Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb, Nap Lajoie, Cy Young, and Honus Wagner, as well as the legendary "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. This sepia-toned premium set was issued with the Sporting News between the years 1909 and 1913. Each premium was issued on only a single day and is dated in the upper right or left. Their method of issue and thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. The collection consists of the following: 1909: Bresnahan (HOF), Cy Young (HOF)/Criger, Mathewson (HOF), Cobb (HOF), Lajoie (HOF), Chance (HOF), Walsh (HOF), Rucker, Wagner (HOF), Jennings (HOF), Collins (HOF), Bell, Speaker (HOF), Brown (HOF), Chase, and Bush. 1910: Evers (HOF), Joss (HOF), Crawford (HOF), Merkle, Mullin, Konetchy, Cobb/Wagner (HOF), Mack (HOF), Plank (HOF), Baker (HOF), Carrigan, McLean, Coombs, Tinker (HOF), Cole, Bender (HOF), Hofman, Wallace (HOF), and McGraw (HOF). 1911: Davis, Archer, Thomas, Byrnes, Milan, Meyer, Barry, White, Doyle, Joe Jackson, O’Toole/Kelly, Gregg, Marquard (HOF), McInnis, Alexander (HOF), Gainor, Snodgrass, Harmon, and Stovall. 1912: Wheat (HOF), Boston Team, New York Team, C. Wagner, Griffith (HOF), Hauser, Lavender, Tesreau, and Hermann. 1913: Daubert, Schalk (HOF), and Birmingham. This lot is highlighted by Joe Jackson, the key to the M101-2 set and one of only a handful of vintage Joe Jackson issues. The Jackson premium was issued on March 23, 1911, and features the future Black Sox legend with the Cleveland Americans. Jackson has a few very light and unobtrusive wrinkles along the top edge. While technically in Very Good+ condition, the condition flaws are minor and the premium has a strong Excellent appearance. The sixty-four remaining premiums (with few exceptions) are also very strong, technically ranging from Gd to Ex, averaging Very Good overall, with flaws that are extremely minor, and with a far stronger Excellent appearance in most cases. M101-2 Sporting News premiums are large, fragile, and easily damaged. For this issue, this is a very impressive-looking and high-grade group. There are only 100 M101-2s in the set, and the offered collection represents a tremendous foundation, with numerous highlights, for the completion of the entire set. Dimensions: each approximately 9.75 x 8 inches. Total: 65 supplements. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000++. SOLD FOR $7,200
